Understanding Charts – 3 hours
Description: Many otherwise-brave knitters are intimidated by charts. There are a few tips and tricks not often explained in patterns, and once you know those, you’ll be well on your way to trying your hand at a pattern that doesn’t include written directions! In this approachable class, we’ll cover frequently-used chart symbols for both lace and cables. Then we’ll make some practice swatches using basic charts and then, once everyone is comfortable, we’ll move on to a slightly more complicated one.
Supplies to Bring: smooth scrap yarn and corresponding needles, highlighters or markers in an assortment of colors, post-it notes.
Fixing Mistakes – 3 hours
Dropped a stitch? Purled when you should have knit? These little mistakes can stop a knitter in his or her tracks until there’s time for a trip to the yarn shop for help. After this class, you’ll have no problem picking up those dropped stitches, ripping out a row and getting your knitting back on the needles, or even just backing up a few stitches. The ability to identify and fix mistakes is what separates beginner knitters from intermediate ones. Advance preparation of swatches is required.
Things to Know: Homework: Swatch #1: Using worsted weight yarn and size US 8 needles, cast on 20 stitches. Knit in stockinette stitch (knit one row, purl one row) until work measures 4″. Do not bind off—leave stitches on needles. Swatch #2: Using worsted weight yarn and size US 8 needles, cast on 20 stitches. Knit in garter stitch (knit every row) until work measures 4″. Do not bind off—leave stitches on needles.
Supplies to Bring: Two swatches listed above, crochet hook (any size from D – H)
